# RBT PDU calculator

> What is the best way to track RBT PDUs?

The most reliable way to track RBT PDUs is to work backwards from your recertification date: record your cycle start, the total units required, and every unit as you earn it, then divide the remaining units by the months left to get a monthly pace. RBTs certifying or recertifying from 1 January 2026 must complete 12 professional development units in each 2-year recertification cycle.

## How it is calculated

- A recertification cycle runs two years from your certification or most recent recertification date.
- In-service PDUs are awarded in half-unit increments — 0.5 for 25 minutes of instruction and 1.0 for 50 minutes — and partial time is never rounded up.
- The calculator subtracts what you have earned from what you need, counts the days left in the cycle, and converts the shortfall into a per-month pace so the deadline never arrives as a surprise.

Formula: `monthly pace = (units required − units earned) ÷ months remaining in the cycle`

## Worked example

1. An RBT recertifies on 1 March 2026, so the cycle ends 1 March 2028.
2. 12 units are required; 4 have been earned by 1 September 2026.
3. 8 units remain with about 18 months left.
4. 8 ÷ 18 = 0.44.

Result: About 0.5 units per month keeps the cycle on schedule.
