How to become an RBT: requirements and timeline
To become an RBT you must be at least 18, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, pass a background check, complete a 40-hour training, pass the RBT Competency Assessment with a qualified assessor, submit an application to the BACB, and pass the RBT exam. Each step has its own timing window, and the order matters: the competency assessment and the background check both have to be current when the application is submitted.

The RBT path is not long, but it is sequenced. Most delays come from doing the steps in the wrong order — finishing a competency assessment months before applying, or booking the assessment before the training is complete — rather than from any single step being difficult.
What are the requirements to become an RBT?
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Hold a high school diploma or the national equivalent.
- Pass a criminal background check obtained within the required recency window.
- Complete a 40-hour training based on the current RBT Task List, delivered by a qualified trainer.
- Pass the RBT Competency Assessment with an assessor who meets the BACB's eligibility rules.
- Submit an application to the BACB and pass the RBT examination.
Confirm every recency window — training, competency assessment and background check — in the current RBT Handbook before you schedule. The BACB updates these, and an out-of-window document is the most common reason an otherwise complete application is rejected.
The order to do it in
- Confirm eligibility and choose a 40-hour training provider whose content maps to the current RBT Task List.
- Complete the training. Keep the completion certificate — the date on it starts a clock.
- Line up a qualified assessor and book the competency assessment, including the items that must be demonstrated with a client.
- Order the background check so it lands inside the window rather than expiring while you wait for an assessment date.
- Pass the competency assessment and collect the signed documentation.
- Submit the BACB application with the training certificate, the assessment documentation and the background check.
- Schedule and sit the RBT exam once the application is approved.
Worked example — a clean eight-week path
- Week 1–2: complete the 40-hour training; certificate dated end of week 2.
- Week 2: order the background check and book the assessor for week 5.
- Week 5: competency assessment completed, documentation signed the same day.
- Week 6: application submitted with all three documents inside their windows.
- Week 8: application approved, exam sat and passed.

This calculator performs arithmetic on the figures you enter. It does not determine compliance — confirm current requirements and how your hours qualify with the certifying body and your supervisor. Projections are estimates built from the pace you enter. Only supervision that actually happens and is recorded counts toward a monthly minimum.
How much does RBT certification cost?
Costs vary by training provider, assessor and testing center, and the BACB sets its own application and exam fees. Check the current fee schedule on bacb.com rather than relying on a figure quoted elsewhere — the fees are revised periodically. Many employers cover the training and application costs for staff they are hiring.
What happens after you pass
Certification is not the end of the paperwork — it is the start of it. From your certification date you are under an ongoing supervision requirement for every month you deliver services, and you are on a renewal cycle that requires professional development units. Both of those are tracked by month, so the record either exists as you go or it has to be reconstructed later.
Set up in the first week of certification
- Record your certification date and the renewal date it implies.
- Store the certification letter, training certificate and assessment documentation in one place.
- Confirm who your supervisor is and that supervision starts in your first service month.
- Start logging service hours and supervision contacts from the first session, not the first review.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does it take to become an RBT?
- The 40-hour training can be completed in one to two weeks, and the remaining steps — competency assessment, background check, application and exam — typically add four to eight weeks depending on assessor availability and BACB processing. Two to three months from start to certification is a realistic plan.
- Do you need a degree to become an RBT?
- No. A high school diploma or the national equivalent is sufficient, along with being at least 18 years old and meeting the training, assessment, background check and examination requirements.
- Who can conduct the RBT Competency Assessment?
- The assessment must be conducted by an assessor who meets the BACB's eligibility rules, which are set out in the RBT Handbook. Confirm your assessor's eligibility before booking rather than after the assessment is complete.
- How long is RBT certification valid?
- RBT certification runs on a renewal cycle, and maintaining it requires ongoing supervision in every service month plus professional development units within the cycle. See the renewal guide for the timeline.
