RBT 40-hour training: timing and sequence
The 40-hour RBT training must be completed before the Initial Competency Assessment, and it stays valid for a limited period — so the training, the assessment and the certification application form one timed sequence rather than three independent steps.

The single most common avoidable delay in RBT certification is a sequencing error: training finished early, assessment scheduled late, and the application submitted after something expired. The steps are simple; their order and their clocks are what catch people.
The sequence
- Complete the 40-hour training with a qualified trainer.
- Complete the Initial Competency Assessment with an eligible assessor, after the training.
- Pass the required background check within the window the BACB specifies.
- Submit the certification application and sit the examination inside the eligibility window it grants.
Each step has its own clock. Confirm the current validity periods in the RBT Handbook before you plan the dates — a schedule that was valid last cycle may not be valid now.

This calculator performs arithmetic on the figures you enter. It does not determine compliance — confirm current requirements and how your hours qualify with the certifying body and your supervisor. Projections are estimates built from the pace you enter. Only supervision that actually happens and is recorded counts toward a monthly minimum.
Planning backward from the start date
If a candidate needs to be delivering services by a given date, plan backward: the examination window, the application, the background check, the assessment, then the training. Planning forward from the training start almost always leaves the assessment as the step that slips.
Worked example — backward plan
- Target start delivering services: 1 November
- Application and examination: allow several weeks before that
- Competency assessment: scheduled at least a few weeks earlier again, around a client's availability
- 40-hour training: completed before the assessment, and recently enough to remain valid
- Result: training should begin roughly two to three months before the target start date
After certification the clocks continue
Certification starts a supervision obligation immediately: from the first month delivering services, the 5% monthly requirement applies. Set up the tracking before the first session rather than after the first short month.
Frequently asked questions
- Can the competency assessment be done before the 40-hour training?
- No. The training must be completed before the Initial Competency Assessment.
- How long is the 40-hour training valid?
- It is valid for a limited period before the assessment and application, so training completed long in advance may need to be repeated. Confirm the current period in the RBT Handbook.
- When does the supervision requirement start?
- The monthly supervision requirement applies from the first calendar month in which the RBT delivers behavior-analytic services.
