RBT renewal: deadline, PDUs and timeline

RBT certification must be renewed on a recurring cycle, and renewal requires more than paying a fee: you need professional development units earned within the cycle, a current competency assessment where required, and a supervision record that holds up for every month you delivered services. Start the renewal work at the midpoint of the cycle, not in the final month.

Renewal fails for boring reasons. Not because someone did not do the work, but because the units were earned outside the cycle, the documentation was never kept, or a month of service has no supervision record behind it. All three are avoidable with a mid-cycle check.

What does RBT renewal require?

ComponentWhat it meansWhere it goes wrong
Professional development unitsUnits earned inside the current cycle, in the categories the BACB specifiesUnits earned before the cycle started, or with no certificate to prove them
Competency assessmentA current assessment where the renewal requirements call for oneAssessment scheduled too late to be signed before the deadline
Supervision recordEvery month of service covered by the required supervisionA month with service hours and no qualifying contact recorded
Attestations and feeRenewal application, ethics attestation and the BACB feeLeft to the final week alongside everything else

Units count only if they fall inside the cycle. Check the cycle start date on your BACB record before claiming anything earned near the boundary.

When should you start?

  1. Month one of the cycle: record the cycle start and end dates and the total units required.
  2. Midpoint: check units earned against half the total. Behind by more than a couple of units means the pace needs to change now, not later.
  3. Three months out: book the competency assessment if the renewal calls for one, and close any supervision month that is short.
  4. One month out: assemble certificates, confirm every unit has documentation, and submit.

Worked example — a mid-cycle check

  • Cycle: 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2028.
  • Midpoint check on 1 March 2027: 4 units logged of a 20-unit requirement.
  • Remaining: 16 units across 12 months — roughly 1.4 per month.
  • Two logged units have no certificate on file; requested from the provider the same week.

A self-audit aid only. Confirm the current requirements for your credential and cycle with the certifying body.

What happens if you miss the renewal deadline?

A certification that is not renewed by its deadline lapses, and a lapsed certification cannot be used to deliver services as an RBT. Depending on how long it has lapsed, recovery ranges from a late renewal to repeating parts of the initial certification path. The lapse and reinstatement guide covers the options and what each one costs in time.

Keeping the proof, not just the units

For every unit, keep the certificate or attendance record showing the provider, the date, the number of units and the content area. A line in a spreadsheet is not documentation. The practical test: if someone asked you today for evidence of a unit earned 14 months ago, could you produce it in under a minute?

Frequently asked questions

How long is RBT certification valid?
RBT certification runs on a recurring renewal cycle set by the BACB. Confirm your own cycle start and end dates on your BACB record, since they follow your certification date rather than a calendar year.
How many professional development units does RBT renewal require?
The BACB specifies the total number of units and the categories they must fall into for the renewal cycle. Check the current figure in the RBT Handbook, and count only units earned inside your own cycle window.
Do supervision hours count toward RBT renewal?
Ongoing supervision is a separate maintenance requirement from professional development units. Both must hold: every month of service needs its supervision, and the cycle needs its units.
Can you renew an RBT certification early?
Renewal opens within a window before the deadline. Submitting inside that window rather than on the final day gives you room to fix a missing document without risking a lapse.

How this works in Operation Optimize

Operation Optimize tracks the cycle rather than the deadline, so the mid-cycle check happens on its own.

  • Cycle start and end dates drive a running units-remaining count and required monthly pace
  • Certificates upload by photo or file and the reader fills in provider, date and units
  • Supervision months that are short are flagged while they can still be fixed
  • Renewal reminders start well before the window opens, not in the final week
