RBT PDU tracker
Under the requirements effective 1 January 2026, RBT recertification runs on a two-year cycle with supervisor attestation and 12 PDUs per cycle. The yearly renewal competency assessment is being phased out: RBTs certified before 2026 complete it one final time at their 2026 renewal, and PDUs replace it after that. A PDU tracker records each activity with its date, title, unit value, category and certificate, then compares the total earned against the cycle so pacing is visible before the deadline.

Professional development records fail for a mundane reason: the certificate arrives by email, gets read, and is never filed anywhere the organization can find it. Twelve months later nobody can evidence the training that definitely happened.
What the RBT recertification cycle actually requires

Make the technician the one who enters it
Development records are most accurate when the person who completed the activity submits it, and a supervisor verifies rather than transcribes. Central data entry by an administrator adds a delay and a second chance for the record to be wrong.
A submission is complete when it has
- The certificate file attached
- A completion date inside the current cycle
- A unit value that matches the certificate
- A category assignment
- A supervisor verification, recorded with a date
Pacing, not totals
A total earned figure on its own is not decision-useful. Compare it against how much of the cycle has elapsed. Someone at 40% of their units with 80% of the cycle gone has a problem that a raw total hides.

- A professional development unit is a recorded unit of continuing professional learning. For RBTs it maps to a real recertification requirement — 12 PDUs per two-year cycle — rather than being purely an internal organizational metric. In-service PDUs are awarded in 0.5 increments: 0.5 for 25 minutes of instruction, 1 for 50 minutes, never rounded up.
- Do RBTs need continuing education to renew?
- Yes. - Should technicians enter their own development records?
- Yes, with supervisor verification. It is faster, more accurate, and it makes the technician an active participant in their own development rather than the subject of someone else's data entry.
