RBT PDU tracker

RBT certification renews annually through a renewal competency assessment and supervisor attestation, and the BACB now also requires professional development — 12 units per renewal cycle. A PDU tracker records each activity with its date, title, unit value, category and certificate, then compares the total earned against the cycle so pacing is visible before the deadline.

Requirements cross-checked against BACB sources on 2026-08-13

Professional development records fail for a mundane reason: the certificate arrives by email, gets read, and is never filed anywhere the organization can find it. Twelve months later nobody can evidence the training that definitely happened.

What the RBT renewal cycle actually requires

RequirementDetail
Cycle lengthOne year, tied to the individual's certification date
Renewal competency assessmentCompleted with a qualified assessor within the 45 days before the renewal application
Supervisor attestationThe RBT Supervisor or Requirements Coordinator confirms ongoing supervision was met
Professional development12 units per renewal cycle
Ongoing supervisionThe monthly 5% requirement must have been met throughout the cycle
AttestationsCurrent ethics and self-reporting attestations at renewal

The professional development requirement is the newest of these and the one organizations most often have no system for. Confirm the current unit count and eligible activity types in the BACB's RBT Handbook for your cycle before planning a year of training — this page is operational guidance, not a compliance determination.

Make the technician the one who enters it

Development records are most accurate when the person who completed the activity submits it, and a supervisor verifies rather than transcribes. Central data entry by an administrator adds a delay and a second chance for the record to be wrong.

A submission is complete when it has

  • The certificate file attached
  • A completion date inside the current cycle
  • A unit value that matches the certificate
  • A category assignment
  • A supervisor verification, recorded with a date

Pacing, not totals

A total earned figure on its own is not decision-useful. Compare it against how much of the cycle has elapsed. Someone at 40% of their units with 80% of the cycle gone has a problem that a raw total hides.

Frequently asked questions

What is a PDU in ABA?
A professional development unit is a recorded unit of continuing professional learning. For RBTs it now maps to a real renewal requirement — 12 units per annual renewal cycle — rather than being purely an internal organizational metric. Organizations also use the term for training tracked beyond the minimum.
Do RBTs need continuing education to renew?
Yes. Alongside the renewal competency assessment, the supervisor attestation and ongoing monthly supervision, the BACB requires professional development units within each renewal cycle. Verify the current unit count in the RBT Handbook for your cycle.
Where should training certificates be stored?
Attached to the individual's development record inside the system of record, so the certificate and the logged unit cannot become separated. An email inbox or a shared drive folder is where evidence goes missing.
Should technicians enter their own development records?
Yes, with supervisor verification. It is faster, more accurate, and it makes the technician an active participant in their own development rather than the subject of someone else's data entry.

How this works in Operation Optimize

Operation Optimize gives every technician a personal development tracker.

  • Drag and drop a certificate; the system reads it and pre-fills the entry for review
  • Files are stored against the individual's record, not in an inbox
  • Progress rings compare units earned against how much of the cycle has elapsed
  • Supervisors verify submissions from a single queue
