BCBA fieldwork hours tracker

How do I track BCBA fieldwork hours?

BCBA fieldwork is tracked one calendar month at a time: record the fieldwork hours you accrued that month (always between 20 and 130 hours), the hours you were supervised (at least 5% of fieldwork hours for Supervised Fieldwork, 10% for Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork), the supervisor contacts (at least 4 or 6 per month respectively), and the observation of you with a client (one each month). Across the whole experience, at least 50% of supervised hours must be individual, at least 60% of total fieldwork hours must be unrestricted activities (40% for BCaBA), and everything must be completed within five continuous years. This free tracker keeps that month-by-month log, checks each month's minimums, and projects when you will reach 2,000 hours (1,500 concentrated; 1,300 or 1,000 for BCaBA).

This tracker performs arithmetic on the figures you enter. It does not determine whether your fieldwork qualifies — record actual hours on the Monthly Fieldwork Verification Forms, keep your own documentation system, and confirm current requirements with the certifying body and your supervisor.

How it is calculated

Fieldwork is evaluated in supervisory periods of one calendar month. Each month's hours must independently satisfy every requirement of the fieldwork type being accrued that month.

You may accrue between 20 and 130 fieldwork hours in a calendar month, under one fieldwork type per month per supervision structure.

Supervised Fieldwork requires at least 5% of fieldwork hours supervised, at least 4 supervisor contacts and one observation of you with a client each month. Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork requires 10%, at least 6 contacts and the same observation.

At least half of supervised hours must be individual supervision. Overall, at least 60% of total fieldwork hours must be unrestricted activities for BCBA (40% for BCaBA) — this is checked across the whole experience, not month by month.

Supervisors must be BCBAs with no current disciplinary sanctions and either at least one year of certification meeting the ongoing supervision CEU requirement, or less than one year of certification with monthly consultation from a qualified consulting supervisor.

Fieldwork must be completed within five continuous years, counted by calendar month, and documented on the Monthly Fieldwork Verification Forms (M-FVF) signed by your supervisor.

adjusted combined total = supervised hours + (concentrated hours × 1.33 for BCBA, × 1.3 for BCaBA); monthly supervision % = (supervised hours ÷ fieldwork hours) × 100, which must reach 5% or 10%

Worked example — 5% supervision, month by month

  1. A BCBA candidate logs three months of Supervised Fieldwork: 80, 90 and 100 fieldwork hours.
  2. Each month they receive 5 hours of supervision on 100, 4.5 on 90 and 4 on 80 — exactly 5% each month — with 4 contacts and one observation with a client.
  3. All three months meet every monthly minimum, and no concentrated hours were accrued, so the adjusted total equals the actual total: 270 of 2,000 hours.
  4. 1,730 hours remain. At this pace of 90 hours a month, the tracker projects roughly 20 more months.

Result: The tracker shows each month meeting the 5% minimum, the 4-contact minimum and the observation, and projects completion in about 20 months at the logged pace.

Related questions

How many fieldwork hours do I need for BCBA certification?
2,000 hours of Supervised Fieldwork, or 1,500 hours of Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork, or a combination — concentrated hours are multiplied by 1.33 when checking the combined total, and the combined total must reach 2,000 hours. BCaBA candidates need 1,300 or 1,000 hours respectively (multiplier 1.3). One BCBA pathway allows only 500 supervised hours, so the standard totals do not apply to every pathway.
How many fieldwork hours can I accrue per month?
Between 20 and 130 fieldwork hours in a calendar month under the current requirements. Requirements effective 1 January 2027 keep the 20-hour minimum and raise the maximum to 160 hours, with concentrated fieldwork supervision rising to 7.5% of hours.
What percentage of my fieldwork hours must be supervised?
At least 5% of fieldwork hours for Supervised Fieldwork and 10% for Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork, checked each calendar month, with at least 4 contacts (6 for concentrated) and at least one observation of you with a client in the period.
What are unrestricted activities in BCBA fieldwork?
Activities a BCBA or BCaBA typically performs independently of a supervisor's presence — behavior assessment, program design, supervision, training, report writing and similar work, as opposed to restricted activities delivered under close oversight. At least 60% of total BCBA fieldwork hours (40% for BCaBA) must be unrestricted, measured across the whole experience rather than each month.
How long do I have to finish my BCBA fieldwork hours?
Fieldwork must be completed within five continuous years, counted by calendar month rather than date to date. Hours earned outside the window do not count toward the requirement.
Can I mix Supervised and Concentrated fieldwork hours?
Yes. Sum the concentrated hours, multiply them by 1.33 (BCBA) or 1.3 (BCaBA), then add the supervised hours; the combined total must reach 2,000 (or 1,300). On verification forms and in the certification application you record only the actual hours accrued — the multiplier is only used to check the combined total.
Does this tracker prove my fieldwork hours are compliant?
No. The tracker is arithmetic on the figures you enter, not an official record. Hours only count when documented on Monthly Fieldwork Verification Forms signed by your qualified supervisor, and eligibility is determined by the certifying body when you apply.
How many hours do I need for BCaBA fieldwork?
1,300 hours of Supervised Fieldwork or 1,000 hours of Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork, with the same 5%/10% supervision percentages, 4/6 monthly contacts and the 20–130 hour monthly range. At least 40% of overall fieldwork must be unrestricted activities.
