A BCBA's CEU cycle is a two-year window tied to the individual's own certification date — not a shared calendar deadline — and all 32 CEUs, including the ethics and supervision minimums, must have completion dates inside that window to count toward renewal.

The window is individual
Unlike a license that renews on a fixed date for everyone, each BCBA's cycle runs from their own certification date. Two BCBAs hired on the same day can have renewal windows months apart. For an individual this is a convenience; for an organization it means there is no single renewal season — every person is at a different point in their own cycle at all times.

Worked pacing example
Cycle starting 1 March 2026
- Cycle ends: 29 February 2028
- Even pace: 32 units ÷ 24 months ≈ 1.4 units per month
- Month 12 check (1 March 2027): on pace at 16+ units
- If only 10 units earned: 22 units over 12 months ≈ 1.9 per month to catch up
- Catch-up is cheapest in the middle of the cycle, most expensive in the last quarter
When the window goes wrong
- A unit completed one day outside the window does not count toward that cycle — completion date, not payment or registration date, decides.
- Category minimums are assessed inside the window too: an ethics unit from the previous cycle cannot be carried in.
- An incomplete cycle is handled under the BACB's published renewal and reinstatement rules — read the current BCBA Handbook for the options rather than assuming an extension exists.
Because cycles are individual, organizational tracking has to be per person: a single shared reminder or deadline will always be wrong for most of the team. Pacing against elapsed cycle time — not calendar quarters — is the metric that predicts trouble early.
