The requirement in one table

Ethics and supervision units are categories inside the 32, not additions to it. A BCBA who supervises and completes 4 ethics plus 4 supervision CEUs still needs 24 further units to reach the total. One caution on the supervision figure: the current BCBA Handbook narrative states 4 supervision CEUs, while an older summary graphic inside the same document still shows 3 — plan to 4 and confirm in your BACB account at renewal.

A BCaBA runs the same structure on smaller numbers: 20 CEUs per two-year cycle, including 4 in ethics and 3 in supervision for those who supervise. Everything on this page about categories, authorization and documentation applies to BCaBAs at those totals.

How many CEUs does a BCBA need — worked examples

The category split is where cycles fail. A BCBA can hold 34 total units and still be non-compliant at renewal if none of them were categorized as ethics, or if a supervisor never recorded supervision units. Total-only progress bars hide this completely — track each category as its own minimum from the first entry of the cycle.

What counts as a CEU

CEUs must come from activities authorized under the BACB's continuing education framework — in practice, events and coursework offered by Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) providers, plus the other activity types the BACB Handbook lists (such as teaching qualifying coursework or certain scholarly activities, within the handbook's own limits). A conference, webinar or in-service is only worth CEUs if the provider was authorized for that activity; the BACB maintains a public directory of ACE providers for exactly this check.

• Verify the provider in the BACB's ACE directory before committing time or money.
• Keep the certificate for every unit — title, provider, date and unit value — where it can be produced on demand.
• Record the category at the time of entry, from the provider's own description of the event.
• Check completion dates fall inside the current cycle; a unit earned one day outside the window does not count toward it.

The mistakes that cause renewal problems

• Leaving ethics and supervision units to the final quarter, when authorized offerings are scarce.
• Assuming any behavior-analytic content counts, without checking the provider's ACE authorization.
• Recording a single running total instead of per-category progress.
• Filing certificates in an email archive rather than attached to the unit they evidence.
• Forgetting that cycles are individual: an organization of BCBAs has a different renewal date for every person.
