RBT competency assessment preparation checklist

Preparing for the RBT Competency Assessment means three things: confirming the logistics are valid (assessor eligibility, timing relative to your training and application), rehearsing each task on the assessment until it can be performed to criterion without prompting, and arranging the tasks that must be demonstrated with a client rather than through role-play.

Assessments rarely fail on knowledge. They fail because a task was rehearsed by explanation rather than performance, or because the session was scheduled outside a valid window, or because a task that needed a client was attempted through role-play.

Confirm the logistics first

Before the date is booked

  • The assessor is eligible to conduct the assessment under current requirements
  • Your 40-hour training is complete and still within its validity window
  • The assessment date sits inside the window your application allows
  • You know which assessment applies to you: initial, renewal or re-entry
  • A client and setting are arranged for the tasks that require them

This calculator performs arithmetic on the figures you enter. It does not determine compliance — confirm current requirements and how your hours qualify with the certifying body and your supervisor. Projections are estimates built from the pace you enter. Only supervision that actually happens and is recorded counts toward a monthly minimum.

Rehearse by performing, not explaining

For each task on the assessment, the standard is a demonstration to criterion. Practice out loud, with materials in hand, at the pace the real session will run. If you can describe a procedure but stumble when asked to run it, the task is not ready.

  • Measurement and data collection performed live, not narrated
  • Skill acquisition procedures run through a full teaching trial sequence
  • Behavior reduction procedures, including what you do when the plan is not working
  • Documentation and reporting completed to the standard your setting uses
  • Professional conduct: how you respond to feedback and to an error mid-session

Some tasks must be demonstrated with a client rather than through role-play. Identify those early — they drive the scheduling, because they depend on a client's availability rather than yours.

The week before

Final week

  • Run a full mock session with a colleague acting as assessor
  • Rehearse the two or three tasks you avoid — those are the ones being avoided for a reason
  • Prepare materials, data sheets and the plan documents you will reference
  • Confirm the client, setting and time once more
  • Write down what you will do if a task goes wrong: stop, correct, continue

Frequently asked questions

How long does the RBT Competency Assessment take?
It depends on the assessor and how many tasks need to be repeated, but plan for a session of a few hours rather than a short meeting, and for at least part of it to involve a client.
What happens if I do not pass a task?
A task performed below criterion is retrained and reassessed rather than being a permanent failure. Confirm your assessor's process for retraining and reassessment before the session.
Can the whole assessment be done through role-play?
No. Some tasks must be demonstrated with a client. Role-play is acceptable only for the tasks that permit it, so check which is which before scheduling.
