BCBA ethics CEU requirements

Ethics is the category most often discovered short at renewal, because it fails silently: a cycle can show 30 of 32 total units and still be incomplete if none of the 30 were categorized as ethics. The minimum is small, but it is a separate gate, not a rounding rule.

What changed in March 2025
The ethics category was widened to explicitly include content on cultural and contextual responsiveness. Events covering culturally responsive assessment, service delivery and supervision can be categorized as ethics when the authorized provider describes them that way. The practical effect is that more offerings now qualify — but the category still depends on how the provider authorized and described the event, not on how the attendee perceived the content.
Keeping the category on track
- Take an ethics-authorized event early in the cycle — authorized ethics offerings are less frequent than general CEU events.
- Record the category from the provider's own description at the time of entry, not from memory at renewal.
- Show ethics progress as its own bar; a combined total cannot warn you about a category shortfall.
- Keep the certificate attached to the entry so the category can be verified against the provider's wording.
The BACB defines what qualifies as ethics content and revises the category over time. Confirm the current scope in the BCBA Handbook before relying on any summary, including this one.
