Supervision CEUs are the requirement most often discovered late, because they look like a subset of the general total until someone checks the categories. A BCBA can finish a cycle with more than enough total units and still be short, simply because none of them were categorized as supervision.

One caution on the supervision figure: the current BCBA Handbook narrative states 4 supervision CEUs, while an older summary graphic carried forward inside the same document still shows 3. Plan to 4 and confirm in your BACB account at renewal — the higher figure is the safe one either way.
Ethics and supervision units are drawn from the total, not added on top of it. Since March 2025 the ethics category explicitly includes content on cultural and contextual responsiveness.
A BCaBA runs the same two-year cycle on smaller numbers: 20 CEUs in total, including 4 in ethics and 3 in supervision for those who supervise.

Who this applies to inside an organization
Any BCBA who supervises trainees or registered technicians falls into the supervision-CEU group. In most ABA organizations that is the majority of the BCBA population, which makes it worth applying as a default and exempting deliberately rather than the reverse.
